A meandering, two-lane highway that starts in regal, riverside Würzburg, then weaves south, past walled-encircled medieval villages (the most famous and magical of which is Rothenburg ob der Trauber), elegant castles, opulent churches, sophisticated cities, including the gorgeous Augsburg, and picture-perfect landscapes, until it concludes in the Alpine foothills, where King Ludwig II’s soaring, cliff-top castle Neuschwanstein rises. To the south and west mighty Alpine peaks – complete with ski slopes, hiking trails and glacial lakes – soar majestically along the German-Austrian border.
