The Author
A Pittsburgh native, Susan Buzzelli has been a sworn Germanophile since she spent a high school summer as an exchange student in Buxtehude, an idyllic town just outside of Hamburg. She went on to live in Dresden, Hamburg, and Munich, but she has spent most of her time in Germany’s capital and Europe’s most thrilling city: Berlin. Susan feels most at home in the sprawling metropolis because it brims with her favorite things: cutting-edge architecture, ethnic eateries, one-of-a-kind boutiques and an endless stock of off-the-beaten path discoveries. She refuses, however, to play favorites—especially after journeying from the Baltic Sea to the Bavarian Alps to research and write this book. As she revisited familiar sights and discovered new ones, she found herself in awe of a country that is timeless and ever-changing, regal and rustic, youthful and traditional—all at the same time. She looks forward to her continued explorations of the fascinating country she proudly calls her second home.
The Guide
Zeitguide Germany captures Germany’s Zeitgeist, a German expression that means ‘the spirit of the times’. Written by a journalist and Germany expert, it provides insightful coverage of the places and experiences that define this fascinating country. Always up-to-date and expanded, Zeitguide Germany is the only guidebook that changes as fast as Europe’s most dynamic country.
Zeitguide Germany’s ten chapters cover the country’s four corners—from its hillside vineyards in the southwest to its white sand beaches in the northeast. Each chapter is anchored by a major destination—a city, a geographic landmark, or a major tourist attraction—and then continues on a tour of the other must-see sights in the surrounding region. All destinations include information about sights, accommodations, food, and getting there and around, but the more “important” a destination, the wider array of listings it gets. Major cities and towns, for example, include listings on nightlife, shopping, parks, gyms, spas, and more, depending on the destination’s distinct offerings. Outdoorsy places, including lakes, mountains and seasides, include information on sports facilities and beaches.
Each chapter of Zeitguide Germany is sold separately so that you can buy only the information that you actually need. No need to lug a heavy book around. In fact, you don’t even have to lug the entire chapter around if you only print the pages that you will use. For example, let’s say you’ll be based in Berlin (Berlin & Brandenburg), but you want to spend the day checking out the seafaring sights in Hamburg (Hamburg, Bremen, & Schleswig Holstein). Since you won’t be overnighting in Hamburg, simply print out information about the city’s sights, restaurants, and shopping. No need to waste paper on the nightlife, events, or accommodations listings.
